The Self-Care Facilitator

Sir Skippy the Sweet

Skippy’s hiring journey was a long one. So long in fact, we do not know the exact times lengths of any of these events. All we know for sure is when he found his way home, he had heart worms, known food scarcity, scars resembling teeth marks all over his hind quarters and a massive fear of storms as well as loneliness. Keep in mind, our boy is currently on a healing journey and living his best life.

Born in an abusive home down in Louisiana, the puppy was used as a bait dog. Day in and day out, chewed on and beat until submission. That was until an act of the GUC saved him with a tornado.

The storm ripped through the south devastating three states and leaving Skippy bare to the elements. He ran. He ran as fast as he could to freedom. There he survived by human garbage (Side note: look up the amount of food Americans waste every year).

That was until a rescue caught him. He was kept in a small concrete and metal cage exposed to the elements without all the freedom he once enjoyed. Now all he was allowed to do was curl up and wait.

There were a few upsides to the new living conditions and one huge drawback. Meals were delivered twice a day. Regular safe potty breaks were given. People would pet and love on him. Some even took pictures. Though he was exposed to the elements, including the rain. And the cage he found himself in, had no place to stay dry.

Thankfully, one day a bunch of people came with leashes. One by one each of the dogs were taken for a walk and never to return. Skippy watched as each cage was emptied until his turn.

He went with the person who put on his leash. He is a good boy after all. They made their way to another cage where he sat as they slammed the doors in his face with love and pets. Soon the cage started to move.

He didn’t know how long they sat in the dark moving to an unknown location. All he knew was fear as he waited like a good boy until he fell asleep.

When he woke, he found himself being moved once again. This time as Skippy sniffed his way inside trying to learn the lay of the land, he realized it was a huge building. He had never been in one of those before.

They took him inside where they gave him a bath and ran all sorts of horrid experiments on him. All the while getting all the treats and love he wanted. There was no real pain. A prick here or a tap there. He decided he liked this place.

He made that little area his home. There was even a bigger drier place to rest. People would walk by and look at him. He wanted to play with them all but none wanted to play with him, making him a sad boy. So when he was in his room with the weird window that allowed all the people, he lied down and waited until he could play again.

That day came one February night. The whole day had passed with him lying and waiting for freedom. It was towards the end of the people parade that ended with dinner and a walk. His favorite part of the day.

On this particular night in his new home, three people came to visit: Saint Josh, Saint Ash, and the GUC Mom.

At first they walked past Skippy glancing and talking as humans do. He thought nothing of it. He doesn’t know how long (we asked) he waited until someone with a leash came. He thought it was for his after dark pee.

Instead, they led them to the three people who took the time to stop and admire him. Skippy came up to each of them as they sat and waited for him. Once he approved, the youngest, Saint Ash gave him treats and played as the two older ones talked.

After several minutes, it was just the three humans and him. It felt like home. He was happy that the three of them choose to come live with him. Though he did try to figure out where they would stay.

The three of them seemed happy and they kept leading them around on a leash until someone came. Then he was lead off for more experimenting before he was brought back to the three for the rest of his days.

The first few nights were rough as he learned the rules of his new home with his new family. Now, he is a vital part of the GUC community making sure each of them gets enough food, water, and outdoor time they need as they do for him. He snuggles up with the GUC mom during storms as a brave boy and pulls dad in as soon as he is done outside after dark. He won’t be caught by any skin walkers. He loves his new life too much.
